Yoo Yongoh is a patent attorney who can provide optimal patent services to small and medium-sized businesses.

Can you briefly explain about your past job experience, and your current role at THEWAVE?

Prior to joining THEWAVE IP law firm, I worked for about 8 years at Y.P.LEE, MOCK & PARTNERS Patent Firm, the largest patent law firm in Korea. I have been handling patent application for individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises (“SMEs”) since then. Currently at THEWAVE, I provide IP R&D support and adjudication on pre-registered patent rights, in addition to the patent application.

What motivated you to join THEWAVE?

I have been seeking a patent firm that could better value my job experience, and fortunately I got a chance to work at THEWAVE, thanks to the people whom I have known at my previous job.

What is the most memorable case or an event you remember while working at THEWAVE?

Last year, our VIP customer faced the risk to have their patent right cancelled as someone applied for its cancellation, and the court made an initial decision to cancel it. Yet I scrutinized the application document, and succeeded to find a misinterpretation in the technical composition of the patented invention. By pointing out and clarifying the misunderstanding, I was able to defend the patent right. That moment was when I felt the greatest sense of accomplishment since I joined THEWAVE.

What do you think is the most important in performing IP work?

What are your strengths, and what are the qualities you have that differentiate you from others?

The most important asset in performing IP work, I believe, is the ‘spectrum of work experience,’ which you can only cultivate by working with clients of various scopes and sizes. I started out my career by assisting individuals and SMEs, and gradually broadened my client boundary to middle market enterprises and conglomerates. After having expanded such spectrum, I was able to develop my strength to provide customized IP service based on the types of clients and the issues they are facing.

What kind of patent attorney do you want to be in the future?

I realized that many business executives, especially those people running small sized enterprises, still overlook the importance of intellectual property rights.

As a patent attorney, I would like to help them secure their valuable patent rights by accumulating and sharing the in-depth experiences. By securing their patent rights, I believe I could indirectly contribute to the society, as it could incentivize the enterprises to create a lot of valuable technologies.
